Faenza: city of ceramics

Faenza became a leading ceramic centre from medieval times onward, facilitated as it was both by its geographic position which made it a meeting point between the Po-valley and Tuscan cultures, and by its rich clayey soil suitable for shaping.

Today, Faenza's role in ceramics is not just limited to the craftwork sector, but also involves industrial production. This sector sees close links between art and technology, with its highly innovative production processes on the cutting-edge of both technology and industrial design.

The productive and cultural buzz that enlivens Faenza has left behind some particularly important testimonies:
The International Ceramic Museum, the "G. Ballardini" ceramics school, the Artistic Industries College (the only one of its kind in Italy), which trains technicians and designers at university level, and the College for Technological Research for Ceramics of the National Research Council (Italian acronym: CNR). Moreover, every year Faenza hosts the International Ceramic Art Competition.
